January 2002's Go Answer of the Month

Dia 1 - From Y09 page 119.

Dia 1

This is a problem from Yutopian's Art of Go series. The problem is to save the white stones in the corner by connecting them to the outside stones or by making two eyes in the corner.

I give their answer here – you may wish to solve their problem before you look at Dia 2.

Dia 2 - Yutopian's solution.

Dia 2

This month's question is "How does White handle Black playing 2' in Dia 2 at 7.

Dias 3 & 4 - Two variations.

Dia 3   Dia 4

These are the two main variations with Black 2 played on the first line. In both of them Black lives happily with all his stones and White's corner dies.

The conclusion here is that the book's problem was cooked incorrectly.

Dia 5 - The problem fixed.

Dia 5

Changing one black stone (triangle) to a white stone seems to fix the problem.

Yutopian's solution still works, and as this shows, the first line move now fails.

It turns out that this month's problem was a sort of 'non-problem'. But still worth while, I believe, as in real games not every situation has a solution and you need to be able to work those out too.
