July 2004's Go Answer of the Month

Dia 1 Black to kill.

Dia 1

It is apparent that there is one white eye on the fifth line, whatever Black may do. Therefore the problem is to prevent a second eye being formed at the bottom edge.

The only way to do this is to manage to get a stone into a key place and then connect it out (or capture a side wall). Tactics such as reducing the eyespace will force the formation of a (small) second eye.

Dia 2 & 3 The belly hit fails.

Dia 2   Dia 3

As can be seen, White easily makes an eye.

Dia 4 & 5 The eye-stealing tesuji works.

Dia 4   Dia 5

In Dia 4, White cannot disconnect black due to a shortage of liberties. In Dia 5, Black sets up a snapback to capture the right side wall.
