November 2005's Go Answer of the Month

Dia 1 What next?

Dia 1

A sequence very like this occurred in the recent small board tournament. As White, I really should have known what to do - however I got it wrong.

Therefore this month's problem is to revise the situation. What next? Does it matter if there is also a Black stone at A?

Dias 2 & 3 Two ways for White to get it wrong.

Dia 2   Dia 3

In both cases White gets only one eye. White 1 is wrong.

Dia 4 Another way for White to get it wrong.

Dia 4

Dia 5 And here is a way for Black to go wrong.

Dia 5

White lives without question and with 7 points of territory.

Dia 6 The correct sequence.

Dia 6

I believe this to be the correct sequence. In it White lives in ko for 3 points.

If I have this wrong, please let me know!

And if Black A is on the board already?

Dias 7 & 8 Black may kill.

Dia 7   Dia 8

Compare with Dias 5 & 6. In these cases Black 6, a monkey jump, may let Black kill White - it all depends if White can escape to the centre with 11.
