[Next] What is "GO"?

Go is a game of territory. Starting with an empty board of 19 by 19 points, the players take it in turns to place one of their pieces on a point aiming to surround more empty territory than their opponent at the end of the game.

For the last 4000 years the rules of go have remained unchanged. Invented in China in about 2000BC, it has been played in Japan since 740AD, in Europe since 1880 and in Britain since 1930. Go is now played in all corners of the world. It is a strategic and tactical two player game, often compared to Chess - but where Chess is a 'battle', Go is guerilla warfare. The rules are simple and can be stated on a single sheet of paper, although mastering Go takes a little more effort.

[Next] West Surrey Go Club

The club meets in a private house in Guildford on Mondays (19:30..22:00) except Bank Holidays.

We have a small but keen membership. Very occasionally everyone on our list attends, which causes slight problems with equipment (we have to use the computer as a board etc). On other occasions only two turn up. I think it is a seasonal thing. We range from 30kyu to 1 kyu, the bulk being 10kyu to 1 kyu.

In a typical evening, we start discussing some problem or game, either from a published book or one a member has played, for half an hour. Then we divide up and play games. Most games are handicapped 19*19, using a ladder scheme to determine everyone's strength within the club.
The ladder page also includes a review of methods used to allocate a player's grade.

(I reckon I am currently 3 kyu. I hope to be shodan (1 dan) one day! (The best British player is 6 dan.))

The club welcomes passing visitors and also curious beginners. We are happy to teach anyone wanting to learn, and this has happened over the last few months since we have had some recruitment success with leaflets in local libraries, some of whom are beginners, some more experienced and seeking others to play. We have also had an influx of visitors, some now members, from abroad - on one evening we had a few Brits, a Korean, a South African and a Frenchman.

The West Surrey teach-in and handicap tournament occurred over the first weekend of December. The 2007 events were successful with 15 people attending the teach-in and 31 the tournament, which was won by Shawn Hearn, 6 kyu. The 2007 results are available.

Other Clubs

When I travel abroad for work, I often try to find a Go club to visit. In past years I have been to Enschede, Gottingen, Kassel, Mannheim and San Diego amongst others.

This section has grown sufficiently for it to need its own page. See Tools for a discussion of:

[Next] Problem of the month

I have decided to take a break from producing these problems for a few months, If you want to be notified when I start doing them again, send me an email.

Offers of problems for this page gratefully received. Please email steve@stocton.org.

[Next] List of Old Problems of the Month.

Twelve problems from each of: 2006, 2005, 2004, 2003, 2002, 2001, 2000, 1999, 1998, 1997, 1996.

Question?

Does anybody read this page(s)? I could put another web counter on them, but that seems a bit OTT and anyway people could visit without reading. If you are READING it, PLEASE send me email (steve@stocton.org) to say so. Praise and criticism also welcome.

[Next] Tournaments

A list of tournaments may be found at the BGA tournaments' index.

Pits is a card game often played in spare moments at Go tournaments. Here are the BGA Pits rules.

Liar dice is another game often played in at Go tournaments. Here are the BGA Liar Dice rules.

Carcassonne is another game often played in Go social settings. Here are the Arundel Go Club variation rules.

[Next] West Surrey Handicap Go Tournament

There is information about the teach-in and tournament: the entry form and also some history.

The winners of the tournament over the years - this includes its predecessor - the RTP Handicap trophy. (For recent tournaments, full results are provided.)

Occasionally the West Surrey club runs other tournaments. Results available are:

We didn't do well at the 2005 European pair go, however the barn dance on the Saturday evening was great fun. See the 20MB .mov movie - suggest you right click, then "save target as". It will take many minutes, even on broadband.
